A Morning at Gabriel Farms: Haskap Berries & a Surprising Brew

One of the quieter joys of being up north is finding places that aren’t in every guidebook. Gabriel Farms & Winery, just outside Petoskey, is one of those places.
We went for the haskap berries—small, deep-blue, and early to ripen. They’re slightly tart, surprisingly flavorful, and perfect for picking in late June. The rows were peaceful, the breeze light, and the work—if you can call it that—felt like a pleasant way to spend a summer morning.
After filling our baskets, we stopped by their tasting room and discovered Four Lads, a clean, fruit-forward brew that was an unexpected standout. It’s light, crisp, and refreshingly unfussy—ideal for a quiet afternoon back at the house or packed in a cooler for the beach.
Gabriel Farms offers more than berries. It’s the kind of place that reflects the region well—unpretentious, welcoming, and rooted in the land.
If you’re staying at Das Nord Haus and looking for a local experience just off the beaten path, berry picking and a stop at Gabriel is worth the short drive.
