A Sunday Drive, A Suzuki Samurai, and Polo in Bliss

One of the best parts about staying at Das Nord Haus is the freedom to slow down and follow wherever the day takes you. On this particular afternoon, we tossed a couple of beach towels and a cooler into the back of our old Suzuki Samurai, dropped the top, and pointed north on M-119—no destination, just the open road and that unmistakable Up North breeze.

The drive was everything we love about this part of Michigan: winding roads under a canopy of trees, glimpses of Lake Michigan shimmering through breaks in the bluff, and roadside farm stands with fresh cherries and wildflowers. But just past the curve near Bliss, something entirely unexpected stopped us in our tracks.

Polo.

Yes—polo. With real horses, mallets in motion, and spectators in sun hats sipping drinks from Yeti tumblers. In Bliss, Michigan.

Naturally, we pulled over. That’s the beauty of traveling in a Suzuki Samurai—top down, no rush, ready for detours.

We soon learned we had stumbled upon a match at the Bliss Polo Club, a low-key gem that’s been quietly hosting summer games in the hills just inland from the lake. There, tucked between pasture and sky, was a field full of motion and elegance—thundering hooves, flying dirt, and the kind of summer energy that makes you feel like you’re in on a well-kept secret.

Kids darted between tailgates, dogs lounged in the grass, and the whole scene felt like a chapter out of a Ralph Lauren ad—with just the right amount of Northern Michigan scruff.

We stayed for a chukker or two, sipped something cold, and smiled at the joy of the unexpected.

So next time you're headed north from Das Nord Haus, windows down and tunes up, keep your eyes open around Bliss. You never know when a spontaneous turn will bring you to horses in motion, cheers on the wind, and a little magic in the middle of nowhere.

Because in Good Hart, even the detours have good stories.
